Former Turnstile Guitarist Indicted, Could Face Life Sentence

Brady Ebert, a former guitarist of the Baltimore hardcore band Turnstile, faces serious legal challenges. Recently indicted for attempted first-degree murder, he could potentially face a life sentence if convicted. The incident that led to these charges involves allegations that Ebert intentionally struck the father of the band’s lead singer with his car.
New Charges and Legal Proceedings
A Montgomery County grand jury handed down the indictment on Thursday. Ebert, aged 33 and residing in Silver Spring, was previously charged with attempted second-degree murder. This charge carries a maximum sentence of 30 years. His attorney could not be reached for a comment regarding the new developments.
Ebert has maintained his innocence, asserting that surveillance footage will clear him of wrongdoing. “This is pure self-defense,” he claimed, suggesting that the encounter was initiated by the other party. A court appearance is scheduled for May 8 to discuss further proceedings.
Details of the Incident
In addition to the first-degree murder charge, Ebert faces charges including:
- Attempted second-degree murder
- First-degree assault
- Two counts of second-degree assault
Currently, he is being held in the Montgomery County Correctional Facility without bail. According to police reports, the incident occurred on March 29. Ebert allegedly drove his 2001 Buick LeSabre down Timberlake Drive while honking the horn. He swerved toward William Yates, the 79-year-old father of Brendan Yates, the lead singer of Turnstile.
Sequence of Events
Witnesses stated that Yates backed away to avoid being hit. He reportedly threw a rock at Ebert’s vehicle in an effort to warn his daughter and her young son, who were attempting to escape. Witnesses further allege that Ebert reversed his car, then accelerated sharply into Yates, causing significant injuries.
According to Assistant State’s Attorney Dominic Plantamura, the injuries were severe enough that a bone was exposed from Yates’ leg. Following the incident, Ebert’s history with Turnstile has been scrutinized. He was part of the band during its rise to prominence, including the critically acclaimed album “Glow On,” released in 2021.
Background on Turnstile
Turnstile recently won two Grammy Awards earlier this year. However, the band’s members ended their association with Ebert in 2022, citing a “consistent pattern of harmful behavior” that impacted the group and the community. This decision occurred shortly after a Baltimore judge denied their request for final peace orders against him.
William Yates spoke about Turnstile in a video message during a recent performance at the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, expressing love and gratitude towards their fans.
As Ebert’s legal troubles continue to unfold, the situation remains tense for both him and the band.
