New Trier School Board Seeks New Member After Resignation

Kimberly Alcantara has resigned from her position on the New Trier Township High School Board of Education. Her resignation comes a year into her second term. Alcantara cited “personal family reasons” for her decision in her resignation letter.
Background on Alcantara’s Tenure
First elected in 2021 and reelected in 2025, Alcantara has significantly contributed to the Board. In her five years, she helped advance New Trier’s strategic goals, which included:
- Expanding opportunities for students
- Improving school facilities
- Fostering an inclusive environment
Alcantara previously served on the Wilmette District 39 School Board and is a practicing attorney. Throughout her campaign efforts, she was supported by the New Trier School Board Caucus.
Board President’s Statement
Jean Hahn, the Board President, acknowledged Alcantara’s invaluable contributions. She noted, “Her insightful questions and commitment to assuring students are supported in every step of the high school journey have enriched our decision-making.”
Filling the Vacancy
The School Board is now looking for applications to fill Alcantara’s vacant seat. Interested candidates can apply through the district’s website until 5 p.m. on May 15. The Board plans to conduct interviews in the upcoming weeks.
Timeline for Appointment
The Board has up to 60 days to appoint a new member through a public vote during a Board meeting. A preliminary vote is expected during the June meeting. The qualifications for board members include residency requirements, as outlined in the board’s policy manual.
Term of Service for the New Appointee
The newly appointed board member will serve until the next local election, scheduled for April 2027. Following that election, the elected candidate will fulfill the remainder of Alcantara’s term, which ends in 2029.
Final Remarks from Alcantara
In her resignation letter, Alcantara expressed confidence in the Board’s ability to continue its important work. She stated, “I have no doubt that this Board and future Boards will continue to be a model of collaboration and civil discourse in maintaining New Trier’s tradition of excellence.”
