Environment and Energy Minister Reviews Two Years, Sets New Priorities
Maria da Graça Carvalho, the Minister of Environment and Energy, recently presented a comprehensive review of her government’s two-year tenure. This review took place during a sectoral debate at the Assembleia da República on April 24. The minister highlighted key actions focused on climate initiatives, energy, water resources, and biodiversity.
Achievements in Climate Action
In her address, Carvalho emphasized a productive period characterized by execution, resilience, and sustainability. Significant achievements in climate action include:
- Establishment of the Climate Agency
- Approval of the National Energy and Climate Plan
- Launch of the Voluntary Carbon Market
Future Priorities for Environmental Initiatives
The minister outlined several key priorities moving forward, aimed at enhancing climate action and related initiatives:
- Operationalization of the Social Fund for Climate
- Development of the National Adaptation Strategy to Climate Change
- Support for electric vehicle purchases, slated to begin between May and June
Water Resource Management
Addressing water issues, Carvalho confirmed two significant projects:
- Initiation of construction for a desalination plant in the Algarve
- Launch of the tender for the Sines desalination plant
Moreover, investments in Alentejo include the construction of the Pisão Dam. The minister also reiterated a commitment to water efficiency in the tourism sector, which will now be extended nationwide.
Biodiversity Conservation Efforts
In the realm of biodiversity, Carvalho discussed progress in marine protected areas and announced a new Iberian lynx conservation program set to launch on May 2. Additionally, she will present the National Nature Restoration Plan by September 1.
Coastal and Urban Restoration Projects
Furthermore, Carvalho revealed that 130 interventions have been identified for coastal restoration following winter storms. Of these, 86 are expected to be completed before the beach season. An urban nature restoration initiative will also commence, starting with pilot projects in:
- Vila Real
- Leiria
- São João da Madeira
- Beja
- Évora
Through these diverse initiatives, the Ministry of Environment and Energy aims to address pressing environmental issues while promoting sustainability and resilience across various sectors.
