Lando Norris Faces McLaren Reality Check; Verstappen Praises Red Bull’s Turnaround

Lando Norris has acknowledged a “reality check” for McLaren after his impressive yet disappointing qualifying session for the Miami Grand Prix. Despite dominating earlier phases of the weekend and securing a win in the Sprint, Norris qualified fourth, falling behind Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.
Norris Reflects on Qualifying Challenges
During qualifying, Antonelli outperformed Norris by nearly four tenths of a second. Norris commented, “Both cars clearly struggled a bit more than Friday, and we need to understand why.” He acknowledged that while McLaren executed well in previous sessions, other teams, particularly Mercedes, showed stronger performance when it mattered most.
McLaren’s Performance Issues
- Norris qualified fourth for the Miami GP.
- Oscar Piastri qualified seventh after struggling with deployment problems.
- Environmental factors like wind and track conditions affected their performance.
Piastri expressed concerns over performance variability and noted issues impacting his last qualifying lap. “It was a bit tough and not the smoothest of sessions,” he stated.
Red Bull’s Impressive Turnaround
Verstappen, on the other hand, praised the team’s significant improvements, which have contributed to their enhanced performance. After struggling in previous races, he felt much more in control of his car at Miami and finished close to Antonelli’s pole time.
Team Upgrades Pay Off
- The Red Bull team implemented a performance upgrade that made the car more drivable.
- Verstappen highlighted the tremendous work done in Milton Keynes to address previous car limitations.
He remarked on the surprise of reaching the front row and noted that the progress is promising for the team moving forward.
Mercedes and Ferrari Developments
Lewis Hamilton also made strides in qualifying, finishing sixth. His performance marked a significant improvement, and he felt optimistic heading into the race. He praised the team for their upgrades and admitted the car felt much better compared to earlier sessions.
Competitiveness Among Teams
- Mercedes introduced 11 upgrades, including a new suspension and floor.
- Ferrari and Red Bull are seen as strong competitors based on recent performances.
Hamilton observed that understanding the various approaches teams took during development is crucial for future races. He added, “We’re still losing a bit on the straights, but we improved a lot during this session.”
As the Miami Grand Prix weekend unfolds, the competitive landscape among McLaren, Red Bull, Mercedes, and Ferrari continues to evolve, promising an exciting race ahead.
