60s-Era Shopping Centre Called ‘Westfield’ Set for Demolition

The Leegate shopping centre in Lewisham, noted for its historical significance, is set to be demolished to make way for a new residential development. Once dubbed the “Westfield of the 1960s,” the Leegate served as a vital retail hub in the community for decades.

Demolition and New Development Plans

Construction crews have begun the demolition process at the site, which will be transformed into a mixed-use development featuring 500 residential units.

  • Location: Lewisham, South East London
  • Number of homes: 500
  • Additional features: 17-storey tower, commercial space, public square, health centre, and supermarket

The original centre, which opened its doors in 1963, was designed to meet the shopping needs of local families, boasting shops like Woolworths and Boots.

Decline of the Leegate Centre

Over the years, the Leegate shopping centre fell into disrepair. By the early 2000s, many retail units were vacant, and the once bustling centre had lost much of its charm.

Local residents express bittersweet feelings about the demolition. Many remember the vibrancy of the Leegate, which fostered a strong community spirit.

Community Memories

  • Peter Elliott, 75: Described the Leegate as the heartbeat of the community, noting its modern features at the time of opening.
  • Karen Howlett, 44: Recalled buying her first CD at Woolworths, highlighting the emotional connection many had with the centre.
  • Carmen Estebao, 51: Mentioned the importance of the Leegate for local needs, emphasizing community bonding.

Future Expectations

Developer London Square aims to revitalize the area, turning it into a vibrant local centre that can attract new residents and businesses. Chief Executive Adam Lawrence commented on the potential for increased investment and renewed community interaction.

He stated, “Our development will transform a run-down site into a vibrant local centre,” emphasizing a commitment to affordable housing.

Planning and Progress

Planning permission for the new development has been granted by Lewisham Council. The project marks a significant move toward rejuvenating the area, which has long been overlooked.

For many, while the demolition of the Leegate signifies the end of an era, new developments offer hope for economic revitalization and improved community infrastructure in Lewisham.
