Bengal Vote Counting Update: Only 293 Seats Processed Today, Here’s Why

As the high-stakes West Bengal Assembly elections draw to a close, a total of 293 out of 294 constituencies are set to determine the outcomes in this politically charged environment. The results will either signify a resurgence for the Trinamool Congress (TMC) or mark the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) first electoral success in the region.

Bengal Vote Counting Update: Only 293 Seats Processed Today, Here’s Why

On May 4, election results are expected, but one constituency remains embroiled in controversy. Falta will continue in the electoral process due to severe allegations of misconduct. A repolling is scheduled for May 21 across all 285 polling booths in Falta, located in the South 24 Parganas district. This decision follows reports of significant electoral offenses that occurred during the elections on April 29.

Security Measures and Repolling Details

The Election Commission has mandated strict security protocols for the Falta repoll. Vote counting in this constituency is set for May 24. Alongside Falta, repolling took place recently in 15 booths across the adjacent Paschim Magrahat and Diamond Harbour constituencies.

  • Falta candidates:
    • Jahangir Khan (TMC)
    • Debangshu Panda (BJP)
    • Abdur Razzak Molla (Congress)
    • Sambhu Nath Kurmi (CPI(M))
  • Allegations Leading to Repoll:
    • Voter intimidation reported by observers
    • Unauthorized presence in polling booths
    • Claims of tampering with electronic voting machines (EVMs)

Incidents of Concern

During the April 29 voting, significant disruptions occurred, including allegations that EVM buttons for the BJP candidate were covered. Central forces intervened to address these issues as complaints surged from voters. Additionally, a report indicated that security forces clashed with a group of voters outside a booth in Belsingh, leading to injuries among several protestors.

In response to these incidents, there were calls for repolling in 77 booths, with 32 specifically in Falta. The Election Commission has vowed to take necessary actions to prevent any future malpractice. This includes deploying additional security personnel and monitoring the electoral process through video surveillance.

Political Reactions

Political reactions have been swift. BJP leader Sukanta Majumdar welcomed the repoll decision, describing it as a triumph for women against perceived local injustices. Meanwhile, TMC’s Abhishek Banerjee defiantly challenged his opponents, asserting confidence in his party’s model for Diamond Harbour.

As the June 4 deadline approaches, the political landscape in Bengal intensifies, with all eyes on the results and the implications for the future of governance in the state.
