Construction Starts on New Bluewater Road Tunnel

Construction has commenced on a new bus tunnel designed to enhance accessibility between thousands of new homes and the Bluewater shopping center. The 75-meter tunnel, with a budget of £25.5 million, will be situated beneath the B255 Bean Road, allowing Fastrack buses to provide a more direct route to the shopping destination.
Significance of the New Bluewater Road Tunnel
Once completed, the tunnel will facilitate not only bus access but also offer pathways for pedestrians and cyclists. It is part of an expanded Fastrack transit system, which recently added a road across the expansive Ebbsfleet Village site.
Project Timeline and Challenges
- Initial Approval: The project received approval in 2020.
- Delay: Six years have passed before construction began due to rising costs linked to high inflation.
- Project Pause: In 2023, Kent County Council temporarily halted the initiative.
- Construction Duration: The tunnel is expected to be completed within 18 months.
Future Connections
The new tunnel will enable Fastrack route E to extend to Bluewater, enhancing connectivity between the shopping center and nearby Ebbsfleet station. This will help link commuters from the new housing developments to essential services.
Housing Development at Ebbsfleet Village
Efforts to construct homes in the Ebbsfleet Village area have faced significant delays, lasting over two decades. Originally, the plan included 15,000 residences, but only about 5,000 were completed by the end of 2025.
The tunnel represents a significant investment in regional infrastructure, aiming to improve transit options and residential accessibility in the area. As construction by Erith progresses, local residents and stakeholders await the benefits this project promises to deliver.
