Toto Wolff Comments on Kimi Antonelli’s Qualifying Error: ‘He Did a Kimi’

Toto Wolff recently commented on Kimi Antonelli’s qualifying performance, specifically his error during the final Q3 lap. Wolff described this mistake as “a Kimi,” alluding to Antonelli’s tendency to overpush when brimming with confidence.

Kimi Antonelli’s Strong Start in Q3

Antonelli began Q3 with an impressive first lap, achieving a time that put him significantly ahead of his competitors. This performance positioned him well for a potential third consecutive pole position.

However, his second lap was aborted due to an early mistake. Despite this setback, Max Verstappen was unable to surpass Antonelli’s initial time, ultimately finishing in second place.

Wolff’s Praise and Critique

Wolff recognized Antonelli’s exceptional first lap, noting that he was “three or four-tenths ahead of the next guy” and calling it “spectacular.” While he appreciated the performance, Wolff acknowledged that the error was reminiscent of past mistakes.

  • Wolff remarked, “But then it was ‘a Kimi’. We are having confidence, and then we are overpushing it.”
  • He indicated that, unlike previous incidents where Antonelli might have crashed, this was just a missed opportunity.

Current Standings and Performance

In his second Formula 1 season, Antonelli currently leads the drivers’ standings, bolstered by victories in both China and Japan. This raises questions about Mercedes’ decision to promote him to Formula 1 at an early stage.

Wolff’s Defense of Antonelli’s Promotion

Wolff defended the choice to elevate Antonelli, emphasizing the thoroughness of their junior program. “You can look like a fool, or you can look well,” he said, highlighting Antonelli’s trajectory from mini karts to Formula 2.

He noted the importance of recognizing Antonelli’s speed and adaptability. “We’ve given him that last year to make mistakes, and there’s more to come,” Wolff stated, expressing confidence in Antonelli’s potential and the attributes he possesses as a driver.
