Blue Jays’ Berrios Pitches in Triple-A Friday; Yesavage Starts Sunday

Blue Jays manager John Schneider provided key updates on players Jose Berrios and Trey Yesavage during an appearance on Blair & Barker. Berrios, sidelined for the entire 2026 season due to an elbow injury, is expected to pitch in Triple-A on Friday. This indicates that Yesavage will take the mound for Toronto in their Sunday game against the Minnesota Twins.
Jose Berrios Returns to the Mound
Schneider noted, “He’s gonna throw in Triple-A today, just a bullpen session, and kinda stay on his routine.” Berrios is on track for at least one more appearance in Triple-A, aimed at increasing his pitch count and game readiness. Schneider expressed optimism about Berrios’ health, stating he is feeling good.
“We want him back into Major League games where he can pitch five, six innings,” he explained, indicating a cautious yet hopeful approach to Berrios’ return.
Trey Yesavage’s Promising Start
Trey Yesavage, the 22-year-old right-handed pitcher, impressed in his season debut against the Boston Red Sox. He delivered 5.1 innings of scoreless pitching, showcasing his potential to contribute effectively to the team this season.
“I thought he did really well stepping in,” Schneider remarked. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a consistent routine for Yesavage moving forward. “This is your first Major League season,” Schneider added, addressing the expectations for the young pitcher.
Managing Expectations for Yesavage
- Consistency is key for his development.
- Schneider wishes to avoid placing undue pressure on him to achieve high strikeout numbers regularly.
Update on Addison Barger
In addition to the updates on pitchers, Schneider discussed Addison Barger’s recovery progress. Barger, who has been out since April 5 due to an ankle injury, is reportedly doing well. “Addy’s doing well. He’s running the bases today,” said Schneider.
He added that Barger is scheduled to play in Dunedin on Sunday. After a break on Monday, Barger may participate in additional games. Schneider expressed hope to observe Barger in action, especially as the team prepares to play at Tropicana Field in Tampa.
Barger’s Performance Before Injury
- Barger struggled with just one hit in 19 at-bats before his injury.
Overall, the updates from Schneider indicate a cautiously optimistic outlook as the Blue Jays navigate player recoveries and the challenges of the season ahead.
