Mariners Update: Matt Brash Placed on IL; Donovan, Miller Near Return

Mariners General Manager Justin Hollander addressed the media, providing updates on several injured players ahead of the team’s homestand. The most pressing concern for fans is reliever Matt Brash, who exited Wednesday’s game due to a side injury.

Matt Brash’s Injury Update

Brash underwent an MRI that revealed inflammation in his lat muscle. This diagnosis is more encouraging than the initially feared oblique injury. Hollander affirmed there are no signs of serious structural damage, and termed the results of Brash’s MRI as “very good news.” Consequently, the team has placed Brash on the 15-day injured list and has called up left-handed pitcher Josh Simpson as his replacement.

Other Player Updates

  • Rob Refsnyder: The outfielder is not starting tonight despite the Royals fielding a lefty pitcher. Manager Dan Wilson noted that Refsnyder is dealing with several minor issues but remains day-to-day.
  • Brendan Donovan: The infielder is slated to travel to Arkansas on Monday for a short rehab stint with the Travelers. He is expected to return to the Mariners after playing for two days if all goes well.
  • Victor Robles: The outfielder will begin his rehab assignment on Sunday. His return may coincide with the start of the Houston series, depending on weekly evaluations and his progress, particularly in making long throws.
  • Patrick Wisdom: Wisdom is set to start a short rehab assignment this weekend in Tacoma as he recovers from an oblique injury.
  • Carlos Vargas: The right-handed pitcher is facing a mild setback in his rehab due to pain in his lat muscle. He will pause his recovery before resuming the ramp-up process.
  • Bryce Miller: In a positive update, Miller is progressing well in his rehab from an oblique injury, with his next outing planned for May 6th in Everett. The team aims for him to pitch 65-70 pitches.

The Mariners appear focused on managing player health effectively as they navigate their upcoming games, balancing the return of injured players with strategic rest periods.
