Wrexham Appoints Birmingham City Leader Nicknamed ‘Dr Doom’ by Tom Wagner

Mark Smith, formerly the chief financial officer at Birmingham City, has transitioned to a new role at Championship rivals Wrexham. His departure was officially announced after he left Birmingham City in April 2026.
Mark Smith’s Career at Birmingham City
Smith served at St Andrew’s for six-and-a-half years, joining the club in 2019 as a financial controller. He was promoted to chief financial officer in June 2021. His tenure was marked by financial stewardship, particularly during Knighthead Capital’s takeover.
Nicknamed ‘Dr Doom’
Smith earned the nickname “Dr Doom” from Birmingham City chairman Tom Wagner. This title reflected Smith’s cautious approach regarding club finances. Wagner remarked that Smith took a conservative stance on spending, ensuring compliance with the English Football League’s (EFL) stringent financial regulations.
Wrexham’s Championship Aspirations
Following his move to Wrexham, Smith will now be responsible for overseeing financial operations. Wrexham recently finished as runners-up to Birmingham City in League One and has adapted well to Championship competition. As the season draws to a close, Wrexham is contending for a playoff position, currently in a tight race with Hull City and Derby County for the sixth spot.
