Jon Cooper, Dan Muse, and Lindy Ruff Nominated for Coach of the Year

Jon Cooper, Dan Muse, and Lindy Ruff have been nominated for the prestigious Jack Adams Award. The NHL announced this recognition on Friday. The award honors the head coach who has significantly contributed to their team’s success over the season.

Jon Cooper: A Consistent Leader

As the NHL’s longest-tenured coach, Jon Cooper has led the Tampa Bay Lightning to impressive achievements. This season marks their ninth consecutive playoff appearance under his guidance. Cooper, 58, has coached the Lightning to five seasons with 50 or more wins and seven seasons with over 100 points.

This year, the Lightning were ranked among the top five teams in both goals scored per game and fewest goals allowed. They also achieved a remarkable 82.6% success rate, finishing with the No. 3 penalty kill in the NHL. Cooper is a three-time finalist for the Adams Award and hopes to win it for the first time, potentially becoming the second coach in Lightning history to achieve this honor.

Dan Muse: A New Era in Pittsburgh

Dan Muse has brought a fresh perspective to the Pittsburgh Penguins after his hiring last offseason. He took over a team that had missed the playoffs for three consecutive years and successfully guided them back to postseason play. Despite a first-round exit against the Philadelphia Flyers, Muse’s impact was notable.

In his rookie season, Muse faced numerous challenges, including injuries and line-up inconsistencies. The Penguins utilized a league-high 44 players throughout the season. If he wins the Adams Award, Muse would be the first rookie head coach to receive this accolade since Patrick Roy in 2013-14.

Lindy Ruff: Breaking the Drought

Lindy Ruff, now in his second tenure with the Buffalo Sabres, has orchestrated a remarkable turnaround, leading the team to its first playoff appearance in 14 seasons. The Sabres’ long absence from the playoffs tied them with the NFL’s New York Jets for the longest streak without postseason play in major American sports.

This season, Ruff’s guidance resulted in the third 50-win season in Sabres history and a total of 109 points—which ranks as the fifth-highest total in the franchise’s history. Furthermore, Ruff celebrated the team’s first division title since the 2009-10 season. The Sabres’ 30-point improvement this season was the second-largest in the NHL, behind only the San Jose Sharks. Ruff previously won the Adams Award in 2005-06 and is a five-time finalist, tying him with legends like Scotty Bowman and Alain Vigneault.

NHL’s Selection Process

The Jack Adams Award finalists were determined through a voting process by members of the NHL Broadcasters’ Association. Coaches who finished among the top three in votes became finalists for this distinguished award.
