Sawpit Bay: A Popular Destination Now Off-Limits
Located approximately 80 kilometers north of Sault Ste. Marie along Highway 17, Sawpit Bay has long attracted visitors for its picturesque views. However, recent events have led the Ontario Ministry of Transportation to post ‘no trespassing’ signs, effectively barring access to the bay.
The Impact of COVID-19
The decline of Sawpit Bay began during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns. Photographers and nature enthusiasts, such as Dan Grisdale, have witnessed the worsening condition over the past two years. Grisdale highlighted the severe damage as “beyond fixing.”
Visible Damage and Litter

- Furniture, including wooden chairs, left abandoned.
- Waste items such as diapers and toilet paper scattered throughout.
- Tents and an abandoned trailer left in disarray.
Grisdale described the situation as “unreal,” indicating that the debris accumulated is extensive, with “two truckloads of furniture” reported. The area became increasingly littered, with ongoing instances of vandalism such as spray painting.
Attempts at Cleanup
In response to the deteriorating conditions, Grisdale and others had previously approached the Ministry of Natural Resources for assistance in cleaning the area. Although some graffiti was removed, it reappeared quickly, suggesting a lack of sustained community care.

Despite the disheartening transformation of Sawpit Bay, Grisdale expressed hope that this closure might deter individuals from further damaging other secluded areas along the Lake Superior shoreline.
