Veteran Jockey Patrick Husbands Retires to Explore the World
Veteran jockey Patrick Husbands has announced his retirement after a remarkable career spanning over three decades. Known as one of Canada’s greatest jockeys, he has made a significant impact in thoroughbred racing.
Early Life and Rise in Racing
Born into a family of equestrians in Barbados, Husbands began his journey on a donkey named Daisy. His father, Walter, a former jockey, encouraged his passion for riding. At just 15, Husbands turned professional, facing challenges early in his career. He vividly recalls his first race, where he fell near the starting gate.
A Career Defined by Success
Over his illustrious career, Husbands won more than 3,700 races and garnered US$184 million in prize money. His accomplishments include:
- Seven Sovereign Awards as Canada’s Outstanding Jockey, first won in 1999.
- Nine Canadian Triple Crown races, including the Triple Crown in 2003 with Wando.
- 388 stakes race victories.
- First, second, or third place finishes in 49% of his races.
In 2023, Husbands celebrated a notable victory by winning the King’s Plate aboard Paramount Prince, marking his third triumph in this prestigious race.
Challenges and Injuries
Despite his success, Husbands faced numerous injuries throughout his career. He endured a traumatic brain injury as a teenager, resulting from a race incident. His injuries over the years include:
- Broken collarbone and ribs that punctured his kidney and lung.
- Severe shoulder separation, affecting his left arm.
- Knee surgery and multiple broken bones.
Husbands says these injuries prompted his decision to retire. A doctor once warned him that continued riding might lead to a wheelchair.
A Reflective Retirement
Having officially retired just before the recent meet at Woodbine Racetrack, Husbands expressed a desire to explore the world beyond racing. He plans to take a break from the track and hospital visits to experience new adventures, such as cruises. He stated, “I just need a break. All I know about is the hospital and the race track.”
Legacy and Future Plans
Husbands’ legacy in horse racing is undeniable. He leaves behind a distinguished career marked by talent and determination. As he embarks on this new chapter, he aims to broaden his horizons and embrace life outside the confines of the racetrack.
With gratitude for his remarkable journey, Patrick Husbands is poised to discover what lies ahead after retirement, forever remembered as a champion in Canadian horse racing.
