TTC Eases Speed Limits for Streetcars

The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) has announced upcoming changes to speed limits for streetcars. Starting May 24, 2026, some restrictive speed limits will be lifted, enhancing the efficiency of streetcar operations. The previous speed limit of 25 km/h at crosswalks and signalized intersections will be adjusted to align with posted speed limits.

TTC’s Speed Limit Adjustments

Key updates include the following:

  • Removal of the 10 km/h speed limit at intersections on The Queensway.
  • Streetcars can now operate at the established speed limit in specific areas.
  • Slow orders will still apply at intersections with ongoing special work or other restrictions.

Driving Safety and Defensive Operations

Despite these changes, operators must continue to prioritize defensive driving. Adaptation to road and weather conditions remains crucial. This initiative marks an initial effort to accelerate streetcar routes, yet restrictions at special work locations, such as switches and crossings, will persist.

Factors Under Review

The TTC is currently evaluating various factors impacting the existing speed restrictions. Key areas of study include:

  • Reliability of electric switch controllers.
  • Advantages of double-blade switches for Flexity streetcars during turns.
  • Signaling systems that confirm switch positions for operators.

This review is critical, as significant changes may be slow to implement, particularly if track and controller replacements are necessary.

Additional Considerations

Other issues under consideration include:

  • The number of manual switches where streetcars routinely turn.
  • The extent of transit signal priority at current and future switch sites.
  • Removal of speed restrictions related to trolley pole operations, especially at low underpasses.

Currently, it is unclear why there is a delay before these new rules take effect. However, the TTC is committed to having these changes fully implemented before the World Cup games.
