L&T Shares Drop 2% After Selling Full Stake in Metro Rail Hyderabad

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) recently experienced a notable decline in its share price, dropping over 2.29% to ₹4,000 during Thursday’s trading. This drop followed the company’s decision to divest its entire stake in L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad.

L&T’s Strategic Divestment

On April 30, L&T announced in an exchange filing that it had entered a share purchase agreement with Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL). HMRL is a wholly-owned enterprise of the Government of Telangana. The divestment is seen as a strategic move to monetize a mature infrastructure asset.

This initiative serves L&T’s larger goal of exiting from its development projects portfolio. The aim is to unlock capital for reinvestment in core engineering and technology businesses.

Hyderabad Metro Rail Expansion

Post-acquisition, HMRL plans to enhance the metro network, thereby solidifying its role in India’s growing urban transit sector. The Hyderabad Metro is one of the largest metro rail projects globally, operating under a Public-Private Partnership model.

  • Coverage: Nearly 69 km across three corridors.
  • Partnership: Developed in collaboration with the Government of Telangana.
  • Impact: Improved connectivity and supported the city’s economic development.

S. N. Subrahmanyan, Chairman & Managing Director of L&T, highlighted the transaction’s importance. He emphasized L&T’s commitment to creating long-term value and enhancing its core, technology-led portfolio. Subrahmanyan expressed confidence that the project would continue to thrive under the Government of Telangana.
