MI Sign Maharaj to Replace Injured Santner

New Zealand cricketer Mitchell Santner has been ruled out of the IPL season due to a shoulder injury. Santner sustained the injury while attempting a catch against the Chennai Super Kings at Wankhede Stadium. He picked up five wickets in four matches, maintaining an economy rate of 8.92.
MI Sign Maharaj to Replace Injured Santner
In response to Santner’s injury, Mumbai Indians (MI) have signed South African spinner Tabraiz Shamsi Maharaj. Maharaj, who has 54 T20I caps for South Africa, will fill the gap left by Santner. He has had limited experience in the IPL, having played only two matches for the Rajasthan Royals in the 2024 season.
Maharaj’s T20 Experience
Despite his brief IPL history, Maharaj boasts extensive experience in various franchise leagues worldwide. His notable accomplishments include:
- Participation in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL)
- Experience in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL)
- Competitions in the Vitality Blast, SA20, and Mzansi Super League
In the latest SA20 season, he excelled as captain of Pretoria Capitals, leading the team to the final. Maharaj concluded the tournament with an impressive tally of 12 wickets from 12 matches. Overall, he has taken 191 wickets in 208 T20 innings, holding an economy rate of 7.12.
MI’s Bowling Options
Alongside Maharaj, Mumbai Indians will rely on several other spinners. The team’s spin options include:
- Ashwin Ghazanfar
- Mayank Markande
- Raghu Sharma
Additionally, allrounder Will Jacks can contribute to the spin department. As of now, MI has struggled this season, winning only two out of seven matches and placing ninth in the points table.
Next Match
Mumbai Indians will face Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday. The team aims to improve its standing and regain momentum in the tournament.
