STM Extends Metro ‘Move Along’ Order Until April 2027

The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) announced the extension of its “move along” order until April 30, 2027. This initiative is designed to enhance safety and improve conditions within the metro system. It empowers special constables to intervene when stations are misused for non-transit activities.
Impact of the “Move Along” Order
Since its implementation in mid-March 2025, the order has been applied approximately 2,500 times each month during winter. STM officials assert that this measure effectively addresses behaviors that compromise the safety of both riders and employees.
Operational Improvements
Analysis of winter operational data revealed several positive trends since the order’s introduction:
- Service reliability improved, with fewer interruptions due to intentional disruptive behavior.
- Escorted individuals decreased by 36% at closing time between November 2025 and March 2026, compared to the previous year.
- There was a 2% reduction in the need for escorts during operational hours.
- Interventions by special constables for incivility fell by 2%.
- Assaults on STM employees remained stable, showing no increase.
- Service interruptions lasting five minutes or longer due to disruptive behavior dropped by 22%.
Future Safety Initiatives
Aref Salem, chair of the STM board, emphasized that improving the sense of safety is crucial for attracting more riders. The “move along” order is just one part of a comprehensive safety strategy. The STM plans to continue refining its measures to further enhance security throughout its network.
As the transit agency works to assure the public of their safety, the focus remains on maintaining a secure and pleasant commuting environment for all metro users.
