The storms brought hailstones measuring up to four inches in diameter, with reports indicating some instances reaching as much as 4.75 inches. Justin Titus of the National Weather Service highlighted the severity of the situation, as large hail rained down during the afternoon hours.
Impact on the Local Zoo
The Dickerson Park Zoo in Springfield suffered significant damage due to the hail. Tragically, a 21-year-old female emu was killed. Additionally, a male rhea required veterinary care following the storm. Fortunately, no staff or visitors were injured, and all other animals remained safe. The zoo announced it would be closed on April 29 to assess and repair the damage.
Damage to Vehicles and Infrastructure
Vehicle damage across the region was extensive. The Missouri State Highway Patrol shared images of damaged patrol vehicles, including one with a completely shattered windshield. Local news reported that cars, roofs, and siding experienced considerable destruction, particularly in northern and western Springfield and Greene County.
Power Outages and Safety Concerns

The Springfield-Branson National Airport cautioned passengers about potential hail damage to parked vehicles. Local authorities continue to assess the aftermath of the severe weather as recovery efforts initiate.
