In a recent press conference, Delhi Capitals (DC) Assistant Coach Ian Bell expressed admiration for the significant impact of fast bowler Mitchell Starc on the team. Bell highlighted Starc’s experience and world-class bowling ability, which he believes are invaluable assets for the squad.
Mitchell Starc’s Return
Starc joined the Delhi Capitals mid-season after overcoming an injury. His first appearance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 was against the Rajasthan Royals on May 1. Although the team would have preferred to have him from the beginning, Bell acknowledged that injuries are part of the game.
“It’s been amazing to have him around. We obviously know his quality, especially from the Ashes,” said Bell. “It’s unfortunate that we haven’t provided him enough runs in recent matches to make a significant impact with the ball.”
Starc’s Influence on Young Players
Bell emphasized that Starc’s influence extends beyond bowling. He serves as a role model for younger players, showcasing a high standard of professionalism. Bell noted that Starc trains with full intensity, which sets a benchmark for both bowlers and batters on the team.
“He’s brilliant not just for bowlers but also for batters. His work ethic and training approach are fantastic for younger players,” Bell added.
KL Rahul’s Leadership
Bell also praised wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul for his leadership and relentless pursuit of improvement. Despite being an established player, Rahul continues to strive for excellence, which Bell highlighted as crucial for the team’s success.

“Having players like KL, who are always looking to better themselves, is important,” stated Bell. He further pointed out that while DC has occasionally scored high totals, they have also faced significant collapses, which cannot be sustained at the elite level.
Need for Consistency
Bell stressed the importance of improved batting consistency for the Delhi Capitals. While the team can score explosive totals, they have suffered from dramatic lows, punctuating the need for reliable support alongside Rahul.
“It would be nice to have more consistent performers. We can’t afford to score 260 one match and be bowled out for 70 the next,” Bell concluded.
