Sky Sports’ Simon Thomas Reveals ‘Shame’ Over Son Finding Alcohol Addiction

Simon Thomas, the presenter known for his role on Soccer Saturday, has opened up about his struggles with alcohol addiction following the death of his wife, Gemma. She passed away from blood cancer in November 2017, just three days after being diagnosed with adult acute myeloid leukemia. This devastating loss profoundly affected Simon and their son, Ethan.
Heartbreaking Family Struggles
Gemma’s death at the age of 40 hit the family hard. Simon described the experience as an “earthquake,” recalling how swiftly everything changed after her diagnosis. By the morning of her passing, the family’s world had shattered. Simon said, “the very foundations on which your life has been built are trembling.”
Left with his son, who was just eight at the time, Simon turned to alcohol as a way to cope with his grief. He admitted to buying a bottle of vodka daily and attempting to hide his drinking from Ethan. Simon shared on the podcast with Matt Willis the painful realization that Ethan discovered his father’s addiction. He expressed deep shame over the situation.
Consequences of Addiction
Simon recounted how he would mislead Ethan about why he couldn’t have a sip of his drink, claiming it was due to caffeine. In reality, Simon was hiding his alcohol. He expressed that confronting the shame associated with his addiction became more challenging than overcoming the addiction itself.
A New Hope
In the years following Gemma’s passing, Simon found companionship and support in his partner, Derrina. They have two young children together, a daughter named Talitha and a son named Theo. Simon has publicly praised Derrina for her role as a stepmother, emphasizing how she supports Ethan and helps him cope with their tragic loss.
