Robertson and Stars Surprise Veteran with Game 5 Trip

Jason Robertson, a forward for the Dallas Stars, continues to make a positive impact through his initiative, “JR’s Heroes.” This program has been in place since the 2021-22 NHL season, providing tickets to families of active-duty service members at every home game. On April 25, 2023, Robertson expanded this program to include veterans by hosting U.S. Army Specialist Cesar Gonzalez and his family during Game 5 of the Western Conference First Round against the Minnesota Wild at the American Airlines Center.

Veteran Honored at Game 5

Gonzalez, an Iraq veteran who served from November 2010 to August 2011, attended the game with his wife, Lupe, and their four children: Cesar (16), Penelope (13), Camila (10), and Kalani (7). Each family member received customized Robertson jerseys and prime seating in the lower bowl of the arena, section 106. Additionally, Gonzalez was presented with a debt relief check, part of a $1.25 million debt relief initiative by the NHL in partnership with ForgiveCo, aimed at supporting U.S. veterans.

Supporting the Military Community

Robertson expressed that this was the first time he hosted a veteran through his program. The “JR’s Heroes” initiative not only grants tickets but also arranges post-game meet-and-greets with Robertson. The forward’s commitment to supporting service members stems from early experiences during his junior hockey days in Kingston, Ontario. Inspired by interactions with military families, he envisioned a program to assist and connect with local communities in Texas.

Gonzalez’s Journey

  • Deployed in Iraq: November 2010 – August 2011
  • Service Locations: Fort Sill (Oklahoma), Fort Riley (Kansas), Fort Hood, Fort Sam Houston (Texas), Fort Jackson (South Carolina), U.S. Army Garrison Schweinfurt (Germany)
  • Current residence: Farmers Branch, Texas

Gonzalez reflected on how the hockey community changed his family’s life, providing structure and new friendships after transitioning from military service. His son, Cesar, became involved in hockey in second grade, further fostering their connection to the sport and community. Gonzalez emphasized the importance of this support, stating, “It means everything to me.” The NHL’s effort to acknowledge and assist veterans is a testament to the league’s commitment to honor those who serve.
