One Week In, New Left-Wing Initiative for 2027 Nears Failure

On April 18, 2023, a new left-wing initiative named “Construire 2027” was launched in France. This initiative aims to provide an alternative in the run-up to the 2027 presidential election. It was spearheaded by key political figures, including ecologist senator Yannick Jadot, Member of the European Parliament Raphaël Glucksmann, and Boris Vallaud, president of the Socialist Party group in the National Assembly.
Initial Reception of “Construire 2027”
The project was presented in the form of a manifesto for public endorsement. It sought to gather support and present proposals, a team, and a candidate name by the end of summer. Upon its release, about 40 elected officials, including members of Place Publique, dissenting socialists, and local officials, backed the initiative.
By the morning of April 19, shortly after the launch, the manifesto collected 2,484 signatures. Just three days later, the count rose to 7,888. As of April 27, the total reached 14,094 signatures. Despite this growth, the initiative struggled to generate widespread public interest.
Challenges Faced
- The initiative resembles an uphill battle due to people’s shifting concerns away from political issues, especially with rising fuel prices.
- “Construire 2027” focuses exclusively on individuals with leftist ideologies, which narrows its potential audience.
- Elements of voter fatigue and disinterest regarding political mobilization may also be contributing factors.
The initiative was compared unfavorably to François Ruffin, a deputy also aspiring for the presidency. Ruffin managed to gather 40,000 signatures within 48 hours of launching his own citizen engagement efforts on January 28, later reaching 100,000 by February 10. As of late April, his participation count stood at 118,991, highlighting the competitive landscape.
Comparative Analysis of Public Support
Yannick Jadot and Boris Vallaud are both struggling to amass a combined 200,000 followers across major social media platforms. This pales in comparison to Ruffin’s established social media presence, which boasts nearly 450,000 followers on X (formerly Twitter) and a similar count on Instagram.
Raphaël Glucksmann, although a prominent figure with about 657,000 Instagram followers, seems to have underutilized his platform for promoting “Construire 2027.” Following the manifesto’s launch, social media engagement from the initiative’s authors diminished. Even during a recent interview, Vallaud failed to mention the project.
The Future of Left-Wing Politics
As questions arise regarding the initiative’s efficacy, there are also concerns over the viability of a third political pathway on the left. Jadot communicated a need to clarify that the aim was not solely about building a political party but rather initiating a deep ideological dialogue. He emphasized that the open signature campaign was intended for broad participation among interested elected officials.
The coming months will be critical in determining how “Construire 2027” evolves and whether it can successfully reinvigorate leftist political discourse.
