Carney Calls 24 Sussex’s Condition an Embarrassment

Prime Minister Mark Carney has called the condition of 24 Sussex Drive “an embarrassment,” signaling a need for decisive action regarding Canada’s official residence for prime ministers. During a recent interview with CBC News, Carney expressed his hopes for the future of this historic site.

The Current State of 24 Sussex Drive

Dating back to the 19th century, 24 Sussex Drive has served as the home for Canada’s prime ministers since 1951. However, it has been uninhabitable since 2015, when it fell into significant disrepair.

  • Closure: The National Capital Commission shut down the residence in 2022.
  • Health Hazards: Recent efforts have stripped the property of mould, asbestos, lead, and pest infestations.

Past and Present Residents

Since 2015, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his family have lived at Rideau Cottage, a temporary residence on the grounds of Rideau Hall. Carney, too, currently resides there, citing the condition of 24 Sussex as a reason for the relocation.

Concerns Over Rideau Cottage

Despite it serving as a temporary solution, Rideau Cottage is deemed inadequate. An internal government memorandum highlighted security risks and space limitations:

  • Proximity to the Governor General’s residence raises security concerns.
  • The small size lacks the functionality required by a Canadian prime minister.

Future of 24 Sussex Drive

Carney believes it is essential to provide future prime ministers with proper living quarters, enabling them to host international leaders and Canadians effectively. Reports suggest that the government will soon address the future of 24 Sussex Drive.

Proposed Options

In 2022, Trudeau proposed several options to tackle the situation:

  • Build a new residence or heavily renovate the existing property.
  • Relocate to another property in Rockcliffe Park with better security.
  • Upgrade Rideau Cottage for official use.

Estimates indicate that any new build or renovation could cost tens of millions, potentially exceeding $100 million.

The Path Forward

As discussions progress, the government remains tight-lipped about the formation of an advisory committee, which would provide guidance on the residence’s future. Carney envisions a time when successors will return to a fully operational 24 Sussex Drive, reiterating the importance of leaving a better legacy for future leaders.
