Stagecoach Resumes as High Winds Subside Following Evacuation

As the winds in the Coachella Valley begin to subside, the Stagecoach country music festival is set to resume after a brief evacuation. This event unfolded at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, where Saturday night proved challenging due to severe weather conditions.

Evacuation Details and Weather Conditions

On April 25, wind gusts exceeded 40 mph in Indio, prompting officials to evacuate attendees shortly after 8 p.m. Subsequently, the festival reopened about an hour later. Meanwhile, parts of the Coachella Valley recorded even stronger gusts, reaching up to 50 mph.

Paul Steward, a meteorologist from the National Weather Service, remarked that while the winds were expected to decline, they could still cause strong gusts in specific areas, particularly near San Gorgonio Pass. After 9 p.m., lighter winds were reported in locations like Palm Springs and Palm Desert.

Wind Advisory and Air Quality Concerns

The entire valley was placed under a wind advisory effective until 11 a.m. on Sunday. In addition, the South Coast Air Quality Management District issued an alert regarding windblown dust and elevated particle pollution levels, particularly PM10. This advisory warned of unhealthy air quality in northern regions of the valley and indicated that dust levels would be “unhealthy for sensitive groups” in areas like Indio.

Festival Experience Amid Weather Challenges

Despite the turbulence caused by high winds, the temperatures during the festival remained mild, with overnight lows on Saturday projected to be in the upper 50s. However, festival-goers are all too familiar with the dust at the Empire Polo Club, especially after the crowds from the previous weekends of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

Forecast for Sunday

Looking ahead, the weather forecast indicates an improvement in air quality to good and moderate levels by Sunday afternoon as winds are expected to weaken. This change should enhance the experience for attendees resuming activities at the Stagecoach festival.

  • Date of Evacuation: April 25
  • Wind Gusts in Indio: Over 40 mph
  • Wind Gusts in Coachella Valley: Up to 50 mph
  • Wind Advisory End Time: 11 a.m. Sunday
  • Projected Overnight Lows: Upper 50s
