Regional Abortion Access Still Challenging from De Gaspé to Montreal
Access to abortion remains a significant challenge in remote areas of Quebec, forcing women to travel vast distances for medical care. In 2023, a woman from Gaspé had to journey to Montreal for a therapeutic abortion due to the non-viability of her 13-week fetus. This journey not only involved emotional distress but also financial strain, as her partner had to purchase a separate plane ticket to accompany her, with travel costs not covered by public health insurance. Rose Gervais, 31, expressed her frustration, stating, “If I could have gone to Gaspé, I wouldn’t have needed to arrange care for my other two children for two days.”
Abortion Services in Montreal
Montreal stands out as the city in Quebec with the most comprehensive abortion services. In 2024, a total of 10,608 surgical abortions were performed in Montreal, accounting for 52% of all such procedures across the province. Many women in remote regions are often compelled to undertake lengthy travels, sometimes over hundreds of kilometers, for various reasons including lengthy wait times, a lack of confidentiality, or advanced pregnancy that disqualifies them for the abortion pill. Patricia LaRue, executive director of the Women’s Clinic in Outaouais, noted that patients might wait up to two weeks for access when only one hospital is available in their area. In contrast, Montreal offers a range of options and the capability to complete the procedure in a single day.
Comparison Across Regions
Despite the challenges, Quebec offers significantly better access to abortion services compared to other Canadian provinces, where access can be severely limited. Dr. Dominique Tremblay, president of the Quebec Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, emphasized the need to improve wait times in rural areas. LaRue added that while efforts to enhance access are ongoing, discrepancies remain for individuals living far from urban centers.
