Jansen Gains Confidence and Comfort in Own Skin Over the Past Year

Marco Jansen has experienced significant growth in his cricket career over the past year. His journey began in the SA20 2025, where he emerged as the highest wicket-taker with 19 wickets, helping the Sunrisers Eastern Cape reach the finals. He continued this strong performance in IPL 2025, taking 16 wickets for Punjab Kings (PBKS), propelling the team to another final appearance.

International Success

During South Africa’s tour of India in late 2025, Jansen showcased his exceptional skills, claiming 12 wickets at an impressive average of 10.08 in two Tests. He also performed well in the T20 World Cup, where he secured 11 wickets at an average of 21.54, contributing to South Africa’s overall success in India.

Building Confidence

During a recent media interaction, Jansen expressed feeling more comfortable in his own skin over the last year. He has embraced his unique bowling style and attributes, drawing comparisons to Australian bowler Josh Hazlewood. “I’ve felt comfortable doing what I feel is best to help me stay consistent,” Jansen stated.

Role Evolution in IPL 2026

In his second year with PBKS, Jansen has adapted to a revised role. Unlike IPL 2025, where he often bowled in the powerplay, he now finds himself bowling primarily in the middle overs. He has bowled the new ball only once in five innings this season, reflecting the team’s strategy to utilize a left-right combination with Arshdeep Singh and Xavier Bartlett.

Adapting to New Conditions

  • Jansen has bowled most of his overs between the 7th and 16th overs.
  • His bowling approach has shifted as he now focuses on utilizing the older ball.
  • Despite taking only five wickets in six matches, his economy rate has improved from 9.20 last year to 8.50 this year.

Jansen remains optimistic about his contributions to the bowling unit. He emphasizes that success is not solely defined by wicket-taking. “It’s a case of reading the conditions and executing our plans as a unit,” he remarked.

Upcoming Challenges

Looking ahead, Jansen’s next significant challenge will be participating in Major League Cricket (MLC) in the USA, representing the Washington Freedom. Following that, he will join Welsh Fire in England for the Hundred, marking his debut in this tournament.

As Jansen navigates various cricketing cultures across the globe, he values building friendships along the way. “I want to make my career count while making lasting connections,” he concluded.
