CT Scans Conducted for Health Checks on Banham Zoo Animals

Veterinarians at Banham Zoo conducted vital health checks on several animals using advanced CT scans. This initiative aims to identify any underlying health issues and ensure the well-being of the zoo’s residents.
Health Monitoring at Banham Zoo
Mishka, an Amur tiger, was among the animals scanned. She was sedated and carefully transported to the CT scanner for examination. Vets focused on detecting any potential bone and spinal changes.
The Significance of CT Scans
The use of CT scanning allows for quick and non-invasive assessments. According to Simpson-Brown, a veterinarian at Banham Zoo, this method helps rule out health concerns effectively. He emphasized the importance of monitoring zoo animals, as their care can influence conservation efforts for big cats in the wild.
Other Animals Undergoing Scans
In addition to Mishka, other animals that underwent health checks included:
- Bob, a one-eyed African black-footed penguin
- Grub, a meerkat
- Arlo, a lethargic sloth
Keepers expressed concerns about Arlo’s unusual lethargy. Simpson-Brown noted that determining a sloth’s activity level can be challenging. However, he praised the keepers for their diligence in observing subtle changes in animal behavior.
This proactive approach in monitoring animal health reflects the zoo’s commitment to high welfare standards and effective veterinary care.
