Gardiner Expressway to Close This Weekend for Major Work

This weekend, navigating Toronto may prove challenging due to significant road and transit closures. The Gardiner Expressway will shut down in both directions for maintenance. This closure affects the stretch between the Humber River and Spadina Avenue, starting at 11 p.m. on Friday and lasting until 5 a.m. on Monday.
Gardiner Expressway Closure Details
The maintenance on the Gardiner is crucial as it prepares the city for the upcoming FIFA World Cup. These closures enable various city departments to work simultaneously, ensuring the expressway remains safe and operational.
Transit Disruptions
- The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) will suspend service on a section of Line 2 Bloor-Danforth.
- The affected stretch is between Kipling and Jane stations and will be closed on Saturday.
- Normal service is anticipated to resume by 8 a.m. on Sunday.
Commuters utilizing GO Transit will also experience service adjustments. Starting Monday, trains on both the Lakeshore West and Lakeshore East lines will see departures shifted by two minutes to better match travel times.
GO Transit Service Enhancements
- Lakeshore East line will reintroduce 15-minute midday and weekend evening service starting May 2.
- Similar service frequency is expected on the Lakeshore West line between Oakville GO and Union Station.
- Two new express trips on the Kitchener Line will commence on Monday.
Seasonal Bus Routes
Alongside these changes, GO Transit is launching seasonal bus routes starting Saturday. These routes will connect commuters to popular local attractions:
- Route 25K: Direct service between Kipling Station and Toronto Premium Outlets.
- Routes 47W and 52X: Service to Canada’s Wonderland.
- Route 96Z: Weekend-only trips to the Toronto Zoo.
All seasonal services are set to operate through August 30. Travelers are encouraged to plan their routes and allow for extra travel time. Public transit is recommended as a viable alternative during these closures.
City officials urge drivers and commuters to stay informed and adjust their travel plans to accommodate these significant infrastructure works.
