Strong Winds Damage Downtown, Alter Calgary Expo Parade Plans

Calgary experienced strong winds in the last two days, leading to significant disruptions in the downtown area. According to Environment Canada, northwest winds reached up to 60 km/h, with gusts hitting 80 km/h. These conditions created hazards for both buildings and outdoor activities.
Calgary Expo Parade Plans Altered
The adverse weather forced organizers to cancel the much-anticipated Parade of Wonders at Calgary Expo. Instead, the event’s kickoff will now take place at the BMO Centre. This change was announced on Friday morning, highlighting the need to prioritize public safety amidst rising wind speeds.
Emergency Response to High Winds
The strong winds caused falling debris that prompted a portion of downtown to be closed. On Thursday evening, at approximately 5:30 p.m., Calgary Police reported that metal panels fell from a Plus 15 structure onto 2nd Avenue S.W. Emergency crews were dispatched to manage the situation.
Calgary Fire Department Battalion Chief Mike Lazaick noted that specialized teams were employed to clear the debris. “They have specialized tools that typical fire apparatus might not carry,” Lazaick remarked. He also indicated that loose construction materials were reported blowing off buildings in the northwest area.
Weather Precautions for Construction Sites
In response to such events, regulations enacted since 2011 require all construction sites taller than five stories in downtown Calgary and the Beltline to implement advanced weather forecasting systems. These systems provide builders with 48 hours’ notice of severe wind events, helping to prevent hazardous situations for pedestrians and vehicles.
- Wind Speeds: Northwest winds up to 60 km/h, gusting to 80 km/h.
- Event Changes: POW! Parade of Wonders canceled; replaced by POW! Party of Wonders.
- Emergency Closures: 2nd Avenue S.W. closed due to falling debris.

No injuries have been reported related to these incidents. City officials continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure public safety as strong winds persist.
