Ticketmaster Removes Ontario Resale Tickets Following Budget Bill Approval

Ticketmaster Canada has announced the removal of resale tickets for events in Ontario. This decision is in response to new provincial legislation aimed at controlling ticket resale prices. Shabnum Durrani, a spokesperson for Ticketmaster, indicated that the platform will facilitate a relisting process for customers next week after updates to the resale marketplace are completed.

Legislative Changes in Ontario

The removal of resale tickets follows the approval of a budget bill by the Ontario government. This bill, which includes a cap on the resale value of tickets, awaits royal assent. The legislation aims to protect consumers from inflated prices, particularly after complaints regarding excessive markup on popular event tickets, including the recent World Series and Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour.

Details on the Resale Price Cap

The Ford government has taken a firm stance against ticket resellers. The plan is to outlaw the resale of concert and event tickets for more than their original prices. This initiative builds on amendments made to the 2017 Ticket Sales Act, which were announced last month.

  • The decision is part of a broader review initiated by Premier Doug Ford following consumer outrage over high resale prices.
  • Previous legislation had allowed resale prices to exceed original costs by up to 50%.

Future of Ticket Reselling

Notably, FIFA World Cup events scheduled in Toronto this summer were thought to be exempt from these new resale caps. However, recent statements from government officials clarify that the cap will apply to these sporting events as well.

Giulia Paikin, press secretary for Minister Stephen Crawford, confirmed, “FIFA will be subject to the cap, no exemptions.” This move underscores the government’s commitment to regulating the ticket resale market and ensuring fair pricing for event-goers.
