Federal Government Greenlights $4B Natural Gas Pipeline Expansion in B.C.

The Canadian federal government has officially approved a significant infrastructure project—the Sunrise Expansion Program. This initiative, valued at $4 billion, aims to enhance British Columbia’s natural gas pipeline network.
Details of the Sunrise Expansion Program
Energy and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson announced that this project, proposed by Enbridge, involves a 139-kilometre extension of the existing natural gas system. Key objectives include:
- Adding 300 million cubic feet of liquefied natural gas (LNG) capacity.
- Connecting Chetwynd, British Columbia, to Vancouver.
- Facilitating natural gas transportation to the U.S. border.
Economic Impact
The Sunrise Expansion Program is projected to generate over $700 million in tax revenue for both federal and provincial governments. Hodgson highlighted that the project would support economic activities in the region and create thousands of jobs.
