The Canadian federal government has officially approved a significant infrastructure project—the Sunrise Expansion Program. This initiative, valued at $4 billion, aims to enhance British Columbia’s natural gas pipeline network.

Details of the Sunrise Expansion Program

Energy and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson announced that this project, proposed by Enbridge, involves a 139-kilometre extension of the existing natural gas system. Key objectives include:

  • Adding 300 million cubic feet of liquefied natural gas (LNG) capacity.
  • Connecting Chetwynd, British Columbia, to Vancouver.
  • Facilitating natural gas transportation to the U.S. border.

Economic Impact

The Sunrise Expansion Program is projected to generate over $700 million in tax revenue for both federal and provincial governments. Hodgson highlighted that the project would support economic activities in the region and create thousands of jobs.

  • Expected to heat homes, businesses, hospitals, and schools.
  • Will establish the first net-zero LNG facility globally.

Project Timeline

Construction for this substantial program is scheduled to commence this summer. Hodgson emphasized that this project showcases Canada’s status as an energy superpower.
