Repentigny Green Belt: Citizens Demand Stronger Protection and Engagement

A recent initiative from March 30 to April 10, 2026, involved a citizen engagement process in Repentigny, where 239 participants shared their opinions on the future of the Green Belt. Out of these, 218 responders from Repentigny provided local insights, highlighting significant trends regarding sustainability and land management.
Support for Stronger Protection of the Green Belt
The survey results revealed overwhelming support for protecting the Green Belt. Nearly 90% of participants favored protection, with 76.1% strongly supporting the cause. In addition, 85.8% advocated for the official establishment of a Green Belt in Repentigny, and 71.2% expressed strong support.
Preferred Uses for Protected Areas
Participants were asked to prioritize the potential uses of the Green Belt if protection measures were implemented. The preferences indicated a clear direction:
- Protected natural spaces: 77%
- Reforestation efforts: 67%
- Pollinator-friendly environments: 63%
- Agricultural activities: 58%
- Access to nature and recreational activities: 52%
- Education and awareness initiatives: 28%
These results underscore a collective concern for wildlife preservation, habitat beauty, flood risks, and urban sprawl.
Desire for Citizen Consultation
There is a strong expectation for increased public participation regarding the Green Belt. About 91% of respondents expressed a need for a dedicated public consultation. Among them, 62.4% strongly favored this initiative. A vast majority believe citizens should have a more significant role in urban planning decisions in Repentigny.
The intent to participate in such consultations is evident, with 87.2% of respondents indicating they would likely attend a meeting focused on the Green Belt.
Significance of Consultation Prior to Planning Decisions
The request for citizen engagement is especially pertinent as the urban planning review progresses. This process has been highlighted since the October 1, 2025 moratorium, indicating a distinct need for public dialogue about the Green Belt.
Francis Charbonneau-Majeau emphasized, “The results are clear: participants want dedicated consultations regarding this territory’s future.” He concluded that a public consultation should be conducted before any decisions are finalized.
Next Steps for Municipal Engagement
A summary of the survey results will be presented to the municipal council of Repentigny ahead of the council meeting on May 12. This will help inform the decision-making process and highlight the community’s expectations regarding the Green Belt.
