South Korean Fighter Pilot Disciplined After Mid-Flight Photo Incident
A South Korean fighter pilot has been disciplined following a mid-flight photo incident that led to severe consequences. According to an official report released on Wednesday, the pilot must pay damages amounting to 88 million won, roughly 59,200 dollars.
Details of the Incident
The incident occurred in 2021 when the unnamed pilot wanted to capture images of his final flight before a new assignment. While flying at a speed of 578 km/h, he asked a fellow pilot to take photos using their smartphones. In an attempt to find the best angle, he executed a maneuver that brought his aircraft dangerously close to another plane.
Collision and Consequences
This reckless maneuver caused a collision between his aircraft’s left stabilizer and the wing of the other plane. Fortunately, there were no injuries, but the incident resulted in damages totaling approximately 878 million won, or about 811,000 CAD. The pilot’s uncontrolled maneuver caused the aircraft to tilt by 137 degrees, allowing for an unusual view from above.
Investigation Findings
The Ministry of Defense had initially ordered the payment of the full repair cost. However, the pilot appealed to an investigative commission, which significantly reduced his financial responsibility to just 10% of the total damages. The commission acknowledged that other pilots had similarly taken aerial photos in the past and noted that the pilot managed to return safely to base without further incidents.
Pilot’s Service Record
- The pilot joined the military in 2010.
- He has served extensively as a fighter pilot, ensuring air safety.
- The aircraft involved was likely an F-15K, as reported by Yonhap News Agency.
This incident raises critical questions about safety protocols and pilot conduct during flight operations. As military standards remain high for air safety, ensuring such occurrences do not happen again is paramount.
