Metrolinx Enhances GO Train Service with Stratford Expansion

The Government of Ontario has announced that Metrolinx will enhance GO Train service by extending the Kitchener line to Stratford. This new route will officially commence on July 6, 2023, making Stratford the westernmost stop on the Kitchener line.
Expanded GO Train Services to Stratford
The Kitchener line currently serves several locations including Brampton, Georgetown, Acton, Guelph, and Kitchener. The introduction of service to Stratford is a key development for the region, especially with the summer festival season approaching.
Historical Context
This is not the first instance of GO Train service reaching Stratford. From 2021 to 2023, a pilot project offered service to London that included stops in Stratford and St. Mary’s. This pilot was discontinued due to low ridership.
Weekend and Weekday Service Details
The new permanent service aims to support increased commuter traffic as employees return to offices and attendance at local attractions rises. Key features of the service include:
- Weekday Service:
- Morning trip from Stratford Station to Union Station.
- Return trip in the afternoon.
- Weekend Service:
- Morning trips from Union Station to Stratford.
- Evening return trips to Toronto.
Economic and Environmental Impact
The Stratford Festival is a significant economic driver, attracting over 400,000 visitors annually. Stratford Mayor Martin Ritsma remarked on the benefits of this service for residents, students, and tourists. It is also seen as a positive step towards reducing automobile traffic on local highways.
Investments in Transportation
This Kitchener line enhancement is part of Ontario’s $70 billion investment in Metrolinx GO services. Additionally, starting April 27, 2023, two more express trains will be added to the Kitchener line, with convenient schedules for commuters.
Michael Lindsay, President and CEO of Metrolinx, expressed enthusiasm for providing reliable public transit options for festival-goers and emphasized the importance of enhancing accessibility for both residents and visitors.
The expansion of the Kitchener GO line marks a significant step in improving transportation links in Southwestern Ontario and encouraging tourism in Stratford.
