Anderlecht Confident, But Next Season Promises Tough Competition

Anderlecht’s confidence in their goalkeeping lineup is bolstered by the promising debut of Justin Heekeren against Gent. With this performance, the club is unlikely to seek additional goalkeepers for the upcoming season. However, Colin Coosemans will face renewed competition.

Colin Coosemans and Team Dynamics

Recent months saw uncertainty regarding Coosemans’s contract extension at Anderlecht. Negotiations had stalled, particularly during Olivier Renard’s tenure as sporting director. Tensions existed between Renard and Coosemans, stemming from their previous collaboration at Mechelen.

Now, both Coosemans and Heekeren will enter the training camp with equal footing. Coosemans, at 33 years old, recently missed a match due to a foot injury but is expected to return against Mechelen. Head coach Jérémy Taravel has indicated that he does not plan to alter the goalkeeping hierarchy before the season concludes.

A Bright Future Ahead

Looking ahead to the summer, Anderlecht’s focus on recruiting a new goalkeeper has diminished. Heekeren’s training performances have impressed, showcasing qualities that were less evident under previous backup Mads Kikkenborg. At just 25, Heekeren brings ambition and a notable stature to the competition.

The Goalkeeper Contest

While it remains uncertain whether Anderlecht will retain Jérémy Taravel post-season, both goalkeepers are set to compete for the top spot during preparations. Heekeren has secured a contract until 2029, promising him a fair chance in the contest.

However, dislodging Coosemans, who is well-regarded in the squad for his communication skills, will not be an easy task. Moreover, a rising star in the team, 17-year-old Mattis Seghers, is also in contention. He extended his contract until 2028 in November and is expected to gain valuable experience in a secondary role.

Seghers’ Development and Future Potential

  • Seghers aims to become the first starter from Neerpede in years.
  • He will continue training with the first team alongside Coosemans and Heekeren.
  • Next season, Seghers is likely to assume a role as a primary goalkeeper for the Futures team.

As the season progresses, the battle for the number one goalkeeper position at Anderlecht becomes increasingly intriguing. With Coosemans, Heekeren, and Seghers all vying for the top spot, the competition promises to be tough and exciting.
