BYD’s 5-Minute Recharge Tested: An Unbelievable Experience

The latest advancements in electric vehicle technology have set a new standard for charging times. BYD has introduced its innovative Flash Charging technology, allowing vehicles to recharge from 10% to 70% in just five minutes. This groundbreaking achievement brings electric vehicle charging closer to the speed of traditional gasoline refueling.

BYD’s Flash Charging Technology

Demonstrated during a workshop for the Denza Z9 GT, BYD’s Flash Charging technology is designed to revolutionize the electric vehicle charging experience. This technology has been in deployment in China since February 2026 and will soon be available in Europe.

Charging Speed and Requirements

  • Flash Charging can provide an impressive maximum output of 1,500 kW.
  • The only vehicle currently compatible with this technology is the Denza Z9 GT.
  • High-end electric vehicles like the BYD Han L and Tang L can recharge in approximately ten minutes.

During the trial, the Denza Z9 GT was charged from 10% battery life, and the results were astounding. In just one minute and thirty seconds, the vehicle regained nearly 20% of its charge, equating to approximately 170 kilometers of range. After five minutes, the battery life increased to over 68%.

Practical Applications and Future Expansion

BYD plans to install up to 20,000 Flash Charging stations in China by 2026. Globally, the company aims to set up 6,000 stations this year, with approximately 3,000 of those in Europe alone. The first Flash Charging station in France is expected to open in June 2026.

Partnerships and Strategic Deployments

Unlike competitors like Tesla, BYD does not intend to develop its own charging network. Instead, the company is negotiating with existing operators such as Total Energies and Electra to utilize their locations for the installation of Flash Charging stations.

These partnerships will allow operators to market their facilities as offering ultra-rapid charging solutions while making electric vehicle charging more efficient and accessible. Although the charging experience will vary among electric vehicle models, many will still benefit from the availability of Flash Charging infrastructure.

Challenges and Considerations

Pricing for using Flash Charging stations remains undecided. As current rates can reach up to €0.65 per kWh, it’s unclear how much operators will charge once installed. Nevertheless, the potential for rapid charging is a significant step forward for the electric vehicle market.

As electric vehicles become more mainstream, BYD’s Flash Charging technology is expected to lead to enhanced user experiences and broader adoption of electric mobility solutions worldwide.
