UK and France Face Kerosene Shortage Risk This Summer

The ongoing conflict in Iran is casting a shadow over summer travel plans in Europe, with a potential kerosene shortage looming. Major airlines, including Ryanair, have announced the possibility of flight cancellations starting in May due to fuel supply constraints.
Impact of Oil Supply Cuts on Kerosene Availability
The International Energy Agency (IEA) released a report outlining the critical situation. Europe consumes 1.6 million barrels of kerosene daily, with 375,000 barrels sourced from the strategically significant Gulf region. This represents a significant vulnerability for the aviation sector.
Current Fuel Reserve Levels
As the region faces supply disruptions, the industry has resorted to using stored reserves. Unfortunately, these stocks are running low. The IEA forecasts that Europe will head into summer with kerosene reserves for only about 30 days, which is the lowest level seen since 2020.
- UK: 25 days of reserves
- Germany: Approximately 20 days
- Italy: Around 40 days
- France: Only 15 days of reserves
The possibility of reserves dipping below 23 days is alarming. The IEA suggests this could lead to systemic shortages at some airports, particularly if the situation remains unchanged.
Countries Most at Risk of Kerosene Shortage
The UK and France are highlighted by the IEA as the most vulnerable markets. The UK is the largest consumer in the region, consuming 317,000 barrels of kerosene daily, significantly more than France and Spain. However, the UK relies on imports for 65% of its kerosene consumption, making it highly dependent on external supplies.
France, although it produces more kerosene relative to its needs, is facing tighter reserves at its airports. The situation in French airports is dire enough that Air France-KLM has increased the price of long-distance round-trip tickets by €100 since late March. This change reflects the brewing crisis within the aviation fuel market.
Comparative Data on Kerosene Supply
| Country | Kerosene Consumption (Barrels/Day) | Import Dependency | Days of Reserves |
|---|---|---|---|
| UK | 317,000 | 65% | 25 |
| France | Approx. 160,000 | 50% | 15 |
| Germany | Approx. 160,000 | 50% | 20 |
| Italy | Approx. 160,000 | 50% | 40 |
| Spain | Approx. 130,000 | 20% | 30 |
Airlines and Regional Disparities
Airlines operating in regions with robust refining capacity, such as Scandinavia, are less likely to face immediate shortages. These airlines benefit from a stable crude supply via pipeline. In contrast, Mediterranean carriers are at a disadvantage as they rely heavily on maritime transport, which is becoming increasingly expensive.
The logistics of aerial refueling complicate the situation for travelers. Those flying longer distances may encounter greater impacts from the supply crisis, especially if their airline sources fuel from countries with tighter supplies.
The kerosene situation remains fluid as stakeholders monitor developments closely. The travel industry is bracing for potentially higher fuel costs and limited availability, which may shape summer travel experiences across Europe.
