Bluesky Users Excel in Blaming Issues on ‘Vibe Coding’

On Monday, Bluesky experienced intermittent service disruptions, coinciding with issues on other platforms. These outages drew notable attention from users who quickly blamed the disruptions on alleged “vibe coding,” a term referring to reliance on AI-assisted programming.

Service Disruptions and User Reactions

The temporary service issues were officially attributed to an “upstream service provider.” However, many users on Bluesky took to the platform to express their frustrations. Posts filled the feeds, with users voicing their allegations against the development team for their use of AI tools in coding.

  • Bluesky users accused developers of using unreliable AI to deliver poor-quality code.
  • Many reactions included memes, alt text, and humor aimed at the developers.

Concerns Over AI-Assisted Development

A prevalent theme among the critics was severe disappointment with the idea of AI involvement in coding. Users expressed genuine anger, arguing that reliance on AI indicated a lack of skill among programmers. One user commented, “Any developer or programmer using ‘vibe-coding’ is clearly too stupid to know how to do the job they’re paid to do.”

This reaction spotlights the skepticism many tech users have about AI tools in development. Despite professionals embracing the advantages of these tools, end users remain hesitant. They perceive AI as a scapegoat for various issues plaguing the tech world.

Bluesky’s AI Utilization

Prior to the outage, Bluesky’s development team faced backlash for acknowledging their use of AI coding tools. Jay Graber, the company’s founder and Chief Innovation Officer, stated in March that the platform utilizes AI technologies, specifically mentioning “Claude Code.” Jeromy Johnson, a Technical Advisor, noted that AI has significantly aided his coding tasks, claiming, “In the past two months, Claude has written about 99% of my code.”

This openness about AI implementation marks a significant shift in software development practices. However, the backlash exemplifies the ongoing discomfort among users regarding the reliance on AI in tech.
