American Red Cross Utah Urges Latino Community to Donate Blood

The American Red Cross is urging the Latino community in Utah to actively participate in blood donations. This campaign, titled Los Donantes, aims to raise awareness and highlight the importance of blood donation among this vital demographic.
Campaign Details and Goals
Launched on April 1, Los Donantes will run until June 30. The initiative focuses on increasing participation from the Latino population, particularly given their significant percentage of O-type blood.
- Los Donantes aims to promote awareness and participation.
- Initiative runs from April 1 to June 30.
- Focused on Latino individuals with O-type blood.
Significance of O-Type Blood
According to Benjamin Donner, executive director of the American Red Cross for central and southern Utah, approximately 57% of the Latino community has O-positive or O-negative blood types. These types are crucial for medical transfusions.
- O-negative blood can be used for any blood type.
- Overall, 44% of the general population has O-type blood.
Heidi Ruster, CEO of the American Red Cross Utah/Nevada Region, stated that this initiative aims to emphasize the value of Latino blood donors in supporting their community, especially in emergencies.
Incentives for Participation
To promote donations, the Salt Lake Blood Donation Center will offer Los Donantes T-shirts to donors between May 1 and May 17, while supplies last. This effort is part of a broader strategy to engage with the Latino community during a critical time when blood supply can be particularly low.
Continuing the Donation Effort
The need for blood donations is a constant challenge. Historically, only about 3% of the population donates blood. In light of this, the American Red Cross encourages everyone to consider donating.
