Security Called on Jason Segel in Finland Over American Custom
Actor Jason Segel recently found himself in a humorous misunderstanding during his stay in Finland. Best known for his role as Marshall Eriksen in the popular sitcom How I Met Your Mother, Segel spent a considerable amount of time in Finland late last year filming his new movie, Over Your Dead Body.
Jason Segel’s Cultural Misstep in Finland
While discussing his experience on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Segel recounted a particularly embarrassing incident. He explained that in American culture, it is common to greet people casually. However, he learned that Finnish people are generally more reserved.
Segel shared that while attempting to engage grocery store workers, his friendly demeanor was misinterpreted. A female security guard confronted him, believing he was under the influence due to his social interaction. “I was just trying to be friendly,” he said, recalling the guard’s confusion.
Life in Finland
During his time in Finland, Segel lived in a cottage in Siuro for two months. He filmed in the Tampere region and embraced local traditions, such as sauna visits and swimming, despite the chilly autumn weather. The cultural differences became evident as he noted how locals often walk without making eye contact.
Social Media Reactions
The actor’s anecdote sparked a variety of reactions on social media, with Finnish users humorously sharing their disinterest in small talk. Some expressed agreement, stating that casual conversations were not part of the Finnish norm.
- “Can I become an honorary Fin? I cannot stand small talk.”
- “What kind of nutter starts chatting to strangers in the supermarket?”
- “Yes. Rule #1 in Finland – no small talk.”
Over Your Dead Body Premiere
Segel’s film, Over Your Dead Body, premiered at the South by Southwest Film & TV Festival before its U.S. release on April 24. In the movie, Segel portrays a man named Dan, who visits a remote cabin with his partner, only to discover that they both have ulterior motives.
The film has received positive feedback, holding a 70% score on Rotten Tomatoes. It is based on the Norwegian movie, The Trip, and features actress Samara Weaving as his co-star.
Personal Life Updates
In a separate segment of the interview, Segel discussed his engagement to dancer Kayla Radomski. He recounted an elaborate proposal at Huntington Gardens, complete with a string quartet playing a song from her favorite movie.
Segel expressed that meeting Radomski has shifted his priorities significantly. “Now, the lens of how I view things has switched,” he noted, emphasizing that he is enjoying this new chapter in his life.
Overall, Jason Segel’s time in Finland not only showcased the differences in cultural interactions but also marked a significant career and personal milestone for the actor.
