First European Train Crosses the Prut River: A Historic Journey

On December 2025, a significant milestone in cross-border rail transport was achieved when the first European train traversed the Prut River. This event marked a major step toward the operationalization of the railway line connecting Zorleni in Romania to Cantemir in Moldova.
Details of the Historic Journey
The train, operated by CFR Marfă and identified by its distinctive logo, undertook a technical test on a newly rehabilitated section of the railway. This test also included crossing the recently renovated bridge over the Prut River, demonstrating the infrastructure’s readiness for use.
Collaborative Efforts
The Regional Branch of Railways Iași, in cooperation with Moldova’s Railway Company, CFM, is committed to completing the Zorleni–Fălciu–Cantemir route. Their work aligns with a memorandum signed by Romania and Moldova in April 2025, which aims to strengthen rail connectivity between the two countries.
Historical Context and Future Plans
- March 2022: The Zorleni–Fălciu–Frontieră line was temporarily reopened to aid Ukrainian refugees.
- January 2025: During the QUINT Meeting held by DG MOVE and the European Commission, a complete reconstruction of the line was agreed upon.
- April 2025: A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between CFR SA and CFM to revive the railway connection.
Goals of the Romania-Moldova Partnership
The initiatives are part of a broader strategy aimed at enhancing cross-border connectivity. Key objectives include:
- Resuming operations on the Fălciu–Cantemir railway bridge.
- Electrifying the Iași–Chișinău line.
- Modernizing customs control at Ungheni.
- Reinstating passenger train services between Cahul and Galați.
These efforts are not only vital for improving regional transport networks but are also poised to foster economic development and facilitate goods transportation across borders.
