Farewell $5 Tickets: Lotto Max Introduces New Price and Format

The Lotto Max, a popular lottery in Canada, is undergoing significant changes starting April 14, 2024. The ticket price will increase from $5 to $6, marking the first price hike since the game’s launch in September 2009. Renaud Dugas, a spokesperson for Loto-Québec, confirmed the update, which aims to enhance the lottery experience for players.
Upcoming Changes to Lotto Max
- New Ticket Price: $6 (previously $5)
- Maximum Jackpot: Now $90 million (up from $80 million)
- Additional Prizes: New Maxplus prizes of $100,000 will be introduced
- Number Selections: Players will select four sets of seven numbers (up from three)
- Number Range: From 1 to 52 instead of 1 to 50
Before the changes take effect, only two draws remain: Tuesday, April 7, and Friday, April 10. The changes reflect a modern approach to lottery games, with the aim of attracting more players.
Enhanced Odds of Winning
With the new format, players will enjoy improved odds of winning minor prizes. The probability of winning a prize will soar from 1 in 7 to 1 in 5.8. However, the odds of hitting the jackpot will stay the same at 1 in 33 million.
Introduction of Maxplus Prizes
The new Maxplus prizes will provide additional winning opportunities. Depending on the size of the jackpot, up to 90 additional prizes of $100,000 each can be won. For instance, if the jackpot is $10 million, 10 Maxplus prizes will be awarded. When the jackpot reaches $90 million, there could be 90 Maxplus winners.
Historical Context of Lotto Max
Lotto Max was introduced on September 25, 2009, replacing the Lotto Super 7 due to underperformance. Inspired by the popular Powerball lottery in the United States, Loto-Québec aimed to create a lottery with attractive jackpots. Initially, players could select seven numbers for a maximum jackpot of $50 million.
Record Wins and Contributions
Since its inception, Lotto Max has delivered over $4 billion in winnings to players in Quebec. The largest jackpot, $70 million, was won on June 18, 2021, alongside 70 Maxplus prizes. In total, more than 50 jackpots worth $80 million have been awarded, with half of those going to winners in Quebec.
