Russian Drones Target Ukrainian Food Warehouse in Lutsk Attack

The city of Lutsk in western Ukraine was recently targeted by Russian drones, leading to significant destruction on April 1. A logistics facility owned by Clever Stores LLC, which oversees the Simi and Sim23 market chains, was heavily impacted. The warehouse, vital for supplying groceries and frozen items, suffered a catastrophic fire.
Details of the Lutsk Attack
The Russian drone strike resulted in the collapse of the facility’s roof. The fire affected over 21,000 square meters (approximately 226,042 square feet) of the warehouse. The attack also damaged essential infrastructures, including a Nova Poshta branch and a residential apartment building.
Impact on Logistics and Supply
- Approximately 75% of the Clever Stores warehouse was reported as damaged or destroyed.
- Over 12,000 square meters (about 129,167 square feet) of inventory was lost, along with specialized refrigeration equipment.
- An additional 9,000 square meters (96,875 square feet) of dry storage facilities sustained significant damage.
Due to the destruction, Simi issued warnings about possible temporary shortages of certain food items in its stores. Despite the losses, there were no casualties as employees were in shelters during the attack.
Wider Context of the Attack
This drone strike in Lutsk was part of a broader Russian assault across Ukraine. Ukrainian air defense successfully intercepted 298 out of 339 drones targeting various regions, including Kyiv, Khmelnytskyi, Poltava, Sumy, and Mykolaiv.
Response and Recovery Efforts
In the wake of the attack, Clever Stores LLC is working to stabilize operations. Efforts include:
- Redistributing logistics flows.
- Searching for alternative warehouse space in Lutsk and nearby areas.
Simi and Sim23 stores continue to operate as usual, maintaining their presence in western Ukraine’s market since 2012. The chain has grown to become the largest network of convenience stores in the country, with over 400 locations offering ready-to-eat meals, coffee, and essential groceries.
