McIlroy Explores Exclusive Masters Locker Room for the First Time

Rory McIlroy recently visited Augusta National, returning for the first time as the reigning Masters champion. His visit was filled with excitement as he explored the exclusive Masters locker room, a space that features only 27 lockers reserved for golf legends. This trip was made during the filming of a documentary for Prime Video.
First Look at the Masters Locker Room
McIlroy’s anticipation was palpable as he recalled his previous visit in April, where he had not yet seen his nameplate in the locker room. Now back, he was eager to discover the names he would share a locker with, including golfing greats like Ben Hogan and Raymond Floyd.
Shared Lockers and Memories
- Ben Hogan – 1953
- Raymond Floyd – 1976
- Rory McIlroy – 2025
Sharing a locker has deep meaning for many champions. For McIlroy, having Hogan’s name adjacent was particularly special, given Hogan’s own achievements in golf history.
The Masters locker room is a unique space, initially established in 1978, and has since undergone renovations without expansion. As a result, masters champions are required to share lockers. While the new Players Services Building offers a larger, more modern locker room for practical needs, the original upstairs room remains a cherished retreat for past champions.
Experiences of Other Champions
Other players who have returned to see their lockers have shared similar sentiments. Hideki Matsuyama described the surreal experience of knowing he could enter the room after his victory in 2021. Tiger Woods shares a locker with Jack Burke Jr., who passed away in 2024, while Jordan Spieth felt a rush of nostalgia when he discovered his name next to Arnold Palmer’s locker.
Scottie Scheffler, another recent champion, was curious about his locker placement next to golf icons from Texas, including Charles Coody. Adam Scott humorously remarked about sharing a locker with Gary Player, recounting a time when his jacket fit poorly due to Player’s usage.
Mark O’Meara’s first encounter with the locker room as a champion was memorable. He found himself sharing space with Gene Sarazen, a legendary figure, and had to inform Sarazen of their shared locker with a friendly gesture.
A Treasured Legacy
The centerpiece of the locker room honors the current champion, featuring a glass case with their green jacket and memorabilia from their win. When McIlroy visited, he found a heartfelt note waiting for him from Jack Nicklaus, who had recently been there, further enhancing the honor of being part of this esteemed group.
The atmosphere of the Masters locker room is intimate and steeped in history. For McIlroy, discovering this legacy was like unwrapping a gift, one that celebrates not just individual achievements but the spirit of golf itself.
