Common Ground: What Connects Michael Caine and John Wayne

ElevenLabs, a company specializing in voice AI technology, has launched an ambitious initiative aimed at helping one million individuals worldwide who have lost their voices due to illness. The program, titled the ElevenLabs Impact Program, is valued at $1 billion, equating to approximately $1,000 per recipient. Since its inception in 2024, this initiative has already assisted around 7,000 people in reclaiming their voices.

Michael Caine and the Iconic Marketplace

Notable among the voices represented in the ElevenLabs Iconic Marketplace is actor Michael Caine. In a deal struck last month, Caine licensed his voice to the marketplace, which aims to illustrate how artificial intelligence can responsibly provide opportunities for both studios and talent, while enhancing storytelling, according to co-founder Mati Staniszewski.

The Iconic Marketplace features a mix of recognizable voices, from Caine to legendary figures like John Wayne. However, it also includes voices from historical figures with little public recognition, such as Amelia Earhart and Mark Twain.

Exploring Voice Licensing

Despite the intriguing selection of voices available, questions arise regarding the demand for recordings from lesser-known figures. When inquiring about the purpose of licensing these voices, the response indicated a focus on the opportunity to hear from a diverse array of historical and cultural icons.

  • Michael Caine
  • John Wayne
  • Amelia Earhart
  • Mark Twain
  • Shoeless Joe Jackson

Interestingly, during a recent visit to the marketplace, it was noted that the voices of Mark Twain and Shoeless Joe Jackson were no longer available, primarily because no audio recordings of their voices exist.

Restoring Voices to Lives

Michael Caine has become a prominent figure for ElevenLabs, appearing in promotional materials for both the Iconic Marketplace and the upcoming short docuseries titled “11 Voices.” This series will showcase the stories of 11 individuals in the U.S. and UK who have regained their voices through AI technology.

Among these stories are:

  • A stroke survivor who resumed public speaking.
  • A hospital chaplain with ALS who returned to counseling.
  • A brain injury survivor who regained social abilities and musical talent.
  • A cerebral palsy patient pursuing acting and modeling.

Impact on Individuals and Communities

According to Staniszewski, the most rewarding aspect of developing ElevenLabs is the opportunity to help individuals reclaim their voices, thereby restoring their identity and agency across different languages and locales. By utilizing past recordings, the technology can create digital voices that integrate seamlessly with assistive devices.

ElevenLabs endeavors not only to empower individuals with voice loss but also seeks collaboration with nonprofits in this field. With over 800 nonprofits engaged across 49 countries, the organization aims to broaden its impact.

“11 Voices” can be streamed on the ElevenLabs website, as well as their channels on YouTube and Spotify, offering inspiring stories of personal triumph through technology.
