NWT Residents Flock to Hay River’s Last Cinema

With the recent closure of the Capitol Theatre in Yellowknife, Hay River’s Riverview Cineplex has become the last cinema in the Northwest Territories. This transition has prompted residents to rally around this local theater and emphasize its importance in the community.
Riverview Cineplex: The Last Cinema in NWT
The Capitol Theatre officially closed its doors after its final screening on Tuesday evening. This change sparked a wave of community support for the Riverview Cineplex, which serves as an independent movie venue for Hay River and its surrounding areas.
- Location: Hay River, Northwest Territories
- Population: Approximately 3,000 residents
- Cinema Status: Last remaining cinema in the NWT
Community Perspective and Future Opportunities
Scott Clouthier, a member of the Hay River Film Society, noted the significant role the Capitol Theatre played. It was the hub for major events like the Yellowknife International Film Festival. He views the closure as a motivational call to protect the Riverview Cineplex.
“This theatre has opportunities,” Clouthier mentioned. He proposed the idea of launching an annual film festival in Hay River. This initiative could help represent the entire NWT, asserting that even small towns have cultural assets to offer residents.
Operational Insights of Riverview Cineplex
Currently, the operators of the Riverview Cineplex have no plans for major changes. They welcome attendees from across the NWT and often see an uptick in visitors during regional events.
- Property Manager: Terry Rowe
- Key Events: Summer territorial track and field championships
Rowe commented on the theater’s appeal, highlighting its consistent audience even in the face of changing movie-viewing habits. He emphasized that having ownership of the building helps in managing operational costs. “Without these advantages, it could be challenging to run a cinema in smaller communities,” he stated.
The Cultural Importance of the Riverview Cineplex
The Riverview Cineplex was established in the late 1990s, aiming to enrich the local community. Many young residents have gained employment at the cinema over the years. Rowe believes that the theater serves as a cultural landmark that brings people together.
As Hay River embraces its role in NWT cinema, the Riverview Cineplex stands firm as a pillar of local entertainment. The community’s commitment to preserving this theater promises to facilitate new cultural initiatives that can benefit all of Northwest Territories.
