Belfast Transforms with Padel Centre, Indoor Golf, and £36M Office Block

The city of Belfast is undergoing significant transformation with a series of approved planning projects that enhance its skyline and community spaces. Here’s a summary of some key developments that have garnered attention in 2026.

Belfast’s Urban Development Projects

New Leisure Complex

A new family entertainment leisure complex was sanctioned in January for the Adelaide Business Centre on Apollo Road, South Belfast. The project will feature an indoor golf course, bowling alleys, a restaurant, a children’s soft play area, and a virtual reality zone. The applicant for this project is Paddy Simpson from Derry.

Social Housing Initiatives

  • Whiterock Road Development: A plan for 77 social housing units received approval in February. This development includes 26 semi-detached houses and 51 apartments, along with a children’s center and landscaping.
  • East Belfast Units: Two residential developments consisting of 35 units for seniors and 53 additional units have also been greenlit in East Belfast.

Transitional Care Unit

A former banking call center on Mays Meadow will be transformed into a Transitional Care Unit, featuring 73 ensuite rooms and rehabilitation facilities. This project was approved unanimously and aims to serve the community’s health needs.

New Office Building

In March, approval was granted for a £36 million project to construct an eight-storey office building at the Lanyon Place Station car park. This facility will include grade A office spaces and will replace the existing car park.

New Indoor Padel Centre

An indoor padel centre is set to replace a vacant warehouse on Redcar Street. The center will offer various amenities including changing rooms, a gym, and courts for both padel and pickleball. The site was initially slated for an apartment complex but has shifted focus to leisure.

Community Access Enhancements

New Walking Trails

A project aimed at improving access to the Belfast Hills was approved in January. The initiative will create new walking trails, linking various communities and enhancing amenities for local residents.

Emerging Controversies

While many projects have been approved, some developments like short-term rental projects have faced local opposition. Councillors continue to deliberate on the balance between development and community needs.

These ongoing projects reflect Belfast’s commitment to revitalizing the urban landscape while addressing housing and leisure needs. As transformations continue, the city aims to create a cohesive and accessible environment for its residents.
