Tuchel Ranks Four Centre-Backs Above Maguire in England Squad Choices

Thomas Tuchel, the head coach of England’s national football team, has indicated that Harry Maguire is currently the fifth-choice centre-back. Despite a strong performance in a recent friendly against Uruguay, where he captained the team, Maguire’s position appears uncertain ahead of the World Cup.
Maguire’s Performance and Future Prospects
In the match against Uruguay, which ended in a 1-1 draw, Maguire showcased solid defensive skills and leadership on the pitch. However, Tuchel remains unconvinced about his place in the squad, stating that Maguire ranks below four other centre-backs.
- Ezri Konsa
- Marc Guehi
- John Stones
- Trevoh Chalobah (injured)
Tuchel’s Assessment
Tuchel recognized Maguire’s strengths, describing him as “very good on the ball” and “strong in the air.” Despite this, he emphasized the need for a different player profile for the starting position.
“I see other players I like to start for us,” Tuchel remarked, confirming his preference for Konsa and Guehi over Maguire.
Injuries Disrupt England’s Defensive Line
John Stones missed the Uruguay match after experiencing calf issues in training. His absence is concerning, as he has struggled with injuries overall, playing just five times since the November international break.
Stones’ fitness will be closely monitored, especially with the World Cup looming, as he has been described by Tuchel as a “world class” player with “credit in the bank.”
Upcoming Matches and Squad Selection
England will face Japan in a friendly match at Wembley, which will be a crucial opportunity for Tuchel to finalize his selections before the official World Cup squad announcement. Other players also leaving the England camp include Aaron Ramsdale, Fikayo Tomori, and Declan Rice.
Following the friendly against Japan, England will prepare for additional warm-up matches against New Zealand and Costa Rica before beginning their World Cup journey on June 17 against Croatia.
