World Bank Supports Montenegro’s Waste Management Reform

The World Bank has taken a significant step in enhancing waste management in Montenegro by approving a €40 million loan. This financial support aims to improve solid waste management, ultimately boosting quality of life in local communities and fostering a more attractive business environment.

Objectives of the Montenegro Waste Management Reform

The Montenegro Waste Management Reform Project is designed to align the country’s waste management practices with European Union (EU) standards. Key objectives include:

  • Modernizing waste services across Montenegro
  • Strengthening institutional capacities at national and municipal levels
  • Reducing reliance on landfills through improved waste treatment and recycling

Key Components of the Project

The project will focus on the following critical components:

  • Construction of a Regional Waste Management Center in Nikšić, which will serve over 75,000 residents.
  • Promotion of recycling and composting initiatives to enhance sustainability.
  • Remediation of approximately 11 hectares of contaminated land at the former KAP industrial site in the Zeta Valley.

Benefits of the Regional Waste Management Center

The Nikšić facility will play a pivotal role in:

  • Implementing modern waste treatment methods.
  • Addressing longstanding environmental risks tied to improper waste disposal.
  • Protecting public health and preserving groundwater as well as the Skadar Lake basin.

Statements from Officials

Christopher Sheldon, the World Bank Country Manager for Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro, emphasized the project’s positive impacts. He noted that it delivers cleaner and more reliable waste management services while tackling historical environmental challenges.

Sheldon remarked, “By strengthening institutions and investing in modern infrastructure, it helps support sustainable growth and closer alignment with European Union standards.”

Financial Support and Project Development

The preparation of this project benefited from a grant provided by the Grant Facility for Preparing Projects Trust Fund. The World Bank’s loan marks a critical investment in Montenegro’s path toward enhanced waste management and environmental sustainability.
